1. Know what you want. It's easy to get caught up in bidding wars and place a bid on the seemingly best (possibly cheapest) deal, but when your box arrives at your home, it may not be what you wanted or needed. Do your research on the different models available, determine your budget, and narrow your choices to three, whether they are of the same brand, similar models, prices, etc.
2. Try it. If possible, find a store near you that has that model on display and take it for a test drive. See and hear if the system does meet all your requirements and needs. 3. Know your Ebay™ Seller. Now that you've decided on what you want to buy and you've decided on a few models that look great, research the seller of the item. You're ready to spend possibly several hundred to thousands of dollars sight unseen, so you want to be sure the seller is worthy of your money. How many ratings does the seller have? How long have the been online? Read the comments of past buyers. Were there any negative comments and what were they?
4. Read the fine print. Now that you're ready to buy, before you click the Commit to Bid button, read the sellers policies regarding returns, shipping, insurance, etc. If the seller doesn't provide insurance, buy it anyway. If the seller doesn't offer it, find another seller. If anything happens to your item and it's not insured, you could be out of luck if the item arrives damaged and the seller refuses to settle with you.
5. Buy with Paypal. Paypal offers Seller Protection with purchases so if there is a problem with your purchase, you could potentially get some or all of your money back.
