DVD Recorders - What You Don't Know Will Cost You!

DVD Recorders are in my opinion one of the most falsely advertised and promoted Consumer products of all time because while most people know the good stuff, very few people are aware of the bad stuff until after they've purchased them. Having said that, you can still get good DVD Recorders for between $50-$100, the key is knowing what you're planning to use them for. You're now saying "Duh, to record DVDs". Well there are limitations on recording which is the "Bad Stuff" and this article will give you general pointers on how to save money when buying a DVD recorder and DVD recordable media (DVD%2BR, DVD-R, DVD%2BRW and DVD-RW).

There are 3 types of DVD recorders: Internal computer DVD recorders aka DVD burners, external computer DVD Recorders aka external DVD burners and Stand Alone DVD Recorders (Some DVR's have a DVD recording drive as well). You can record TV Shows on stand alone DVD recorders as well as computer DVD recorders if your computer has a card installed that will let you receive broadcasts from Cable TV provided there is a "hub" to connect your cable too. The main difference between the stand alone DVD recorders and the computer Internal and external recorders are that the stand alone DVD Recorders can not as far as I know record in 5.1 sound while internal and external computer DVD recorders can. This is one of the things they don't tell you about Stand Alone DVD recorders. One thing however I found the Stand Alone DVD Recorder to do better/easier than a computer DVD recorder is to transfer old Video tapes to DVD.

The Major Thing they don't tell you about DVD recorders is it's almost impossible to make a DVD recording of a commercially sold DVD as most of them are encrypted, as well as being illegal. I believe that making recordings of non-encrypted commercial DVDs is also illegal. There are no commercially sold retail software or devices as far as I know that will let you record copies of commercial DVDs that have been encrypted. So if you are planning to buy a DVD recorder to make recordings of commercially sold DVDS, you are wasting your time. Note, if you do a search on the internet there probably is software that will allow you to make these recordings, however doing so is illegal.

The other thing they don't really tell you about DVD Recorders is that they are built to self destruct as the lasers eventually wear down, While stand alone and external computer DVD recorders are relatively cheap, they usually don't last more than a couple of years before their lasers break down. The good news is, they're relatively cheap and just consider them a disposable product. My internal computer DVD Recorders have never broken down. You do need software to record DVD's on your computer and a lot of these players come with software. I use Nero Software which I love and which is also good for burning CDs as well.

I recommend if you are buying a stand alone DVD recorder for basic recording of TV shows, to buy any Lite-On DVD Recorder with a built in TV Tuner, that you can get under $100. Lite-On is incredibly easy to use as they have a really good easy remote control program that guides you step by step. The picture and sound are good as well. I say its better to spend under $100 on something that you know will eventually break down then spend $250 or more for a fancier recorder that will also eventually break down. Whatever you do, do not buy a used or refurbished DVD recorder because its life is even more limited as its laser has already been worn down- to what degree you don't know.

If your computer does not have an internal DVD recorder, you can get a decent small external DVD recorder for between $50-$95 new. I would recommend an HP 20x Super Multi DVD Writer (Recorder) which you can get for under $60 new at discount. Most of these players come with free software and as I mentioned I would go with any one that came with Nero software. The external DVD recorders connect easily to your computer by USB and they record CDs as well. They also play CDs and DVDs besides recording them.

I would recommend if you are using a stand alone DVD Recorder to only use DVD%2BRW or DVD-RW media, as these are re-recordable DVDs and you can play them on any DVD player as soon as you finished recording. If you buy the standard DVD%2BR or DVD-R disc, you can not re-record on them and more importantly you will need to do an extra step on your Stand Alone DVD Recorder called Finalize. If you forget to Finalize, the DVD will not play on anything other then your DVD recorder. You do not need to Finalize a DVD%2BRW or DVD-RW disc, which is why I recommend you buy them for stand alone DVD recorders. For internal or external computer DVD recorders you do not need to manually finalize anything as the software does everything itself so you don't need to spend the extra money on re-recordable discs. Having said that, I would still buy at least 10 re-recordable discs as when you're first recording on the computer as you'll probably make a bunch of mistakes, almost everyone does, and this way you can practice till you make perfect. Personally, I would recommend if you have a friend who has recorded DVDs on the computer to show you how to do everything step by step. It's an easy process but like everything else you learn by trial and error.

I also noticed that when I recorded DVDs, the drop in quality from recording at SP to LP and LP to EP, is a lot more prominent in DVDS then video tape. If quality is a concern, I would record at SP when you can and no lower than EP.

I hope you enjoy using your DVD recorder. If you are planning to do things more advanced then editing, then of course I would recommend buying a more advanced recorder but for the basic things, you can get a decent DVD recorder between $50-$100.

* It is extremely sensitive. The Garmin 350 will retain its satellite lock and continue showing you the way even if you go under trees, even if you have to stow it in your bag.

* It is small - fits nicely in the hand. It is lightweight. So it's very comfortable to carry with you as you zero in on your geocache.

* The screen is a good size, the display is very clear. It is very easy to read.

* The Garmin 350 displays easy-to-understand information with detailed 2D and 3D maps and up to 500 way points.

* If you already have one, there's no learning curve - you already know how to use it. If you don't have one, the learning curve is extremely shallow. This GPS is very easy to figure out.

* The Garmin 350 is primarily designed as a driving gps - to help you drive to where you're going. And it is stellar at doing that. So, if you need to drive for part of your route, the Garmin 350 has that covered. Once on foot, you switch to 'Pedestrian' mode and again, this 350 GPS does a fabulous job.

So for geocaching, the Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS is very capable. It does the finding very well indeed. However, 3 things make it less than ideal for geocaching:

1. It's not waterproof. You're very likely to get wet while out on your hunts. Unless of course you live and hunt in the dessert. Plastic bags and boxes can give some protection, but really you want the gps to be waterproof to be sure you don't kill it.

2. Battery life. While driving with Garmin 350, there is no power problem because you plug it into the car lighter and use car juice. When you stop, however, you then have about 5 hours or so before you need to recharge. And of course you don't want your gps dying on you.

This wouldn't be a problem - maybe just a minor inconvenience - if you could simply take some spare batteries with you. But you can't. Not with the 350.

As you can see, this severely limits how far you can go from the car. The battery life could also take away some of the most attractive things about geocaching - such as being able to explore new places further. Such as, having discovered somewhere amazing, being able to decide right there on the spot to stop and enjoy it. With the 350 you're on the clock.
3. Robustness. I don't know how robust the Garmin350 is. The thing is, the more geocaching you do, the more the GPS will get knocked about. I don't know how it will fare. I just don't get the impression it will do well.

Conclusion

Your Garmin Nuvi 350 can find geocaches. No question about that.

I would not recommend you use it for geocaching in the long term. If you are starting out and want to do a couple of mostly urban, in-town geocache hunts to see if you like it, then do go ahead. Think about protecting the GPS, though.

The lower wavelength allows for the amount of data that is stored on an optical disc to be increased dramatically. Blu-ray discs have an even larger storage capacity per layer than the now obsolete HD DVD. A standard Blu-ray disc can store as much as 25 MB of digital data. That is more than five times the storage of the standard DVD disc used today. A standard HD DVD disc has a capacity of up to 15 MB per layer, though superior to today's products it does not match the Blu-ray numbers. You may say that the difference is not that big of a deal, so lets compare. The standard Blu-ray disc can hold up to two hours of high definition television or thirteen hours of standard definition television. There are 50 MB to 200MB storage discs in the works that will hold up to 18 hours of high definition television. There are even mini discs in the works that can be used in next generation Blu-ray camcorders that will allow the user to film home movies in high definition like never seen before.

This is a really useful feature when you need to turn the camera a full 90 degrees to frame a picture. No longer do you have to contort your wrists to grab the shot and using the camera in portrait mode is just as straightforward as it would be in 'landscape' orientation.

As you would expect with a Canon camera product, the BG-E3 battery grip is very well constructed and fits the Digital Rebel XT/Xti so well that it looks like it should always have been there! - Canon have thoughtfully added a separate on/off switch to the BG-E3, so that you need never run the risk of accidentally triggering the vertical grip shutter controls unless you want to. When I think back on all the money I've spent on my golf addiction over the years, it's practically unfathomable. I, like so many other golfers out there, am an equipment addict. I love trying out the latest and greatest drivers, irons, balls, etc. When the golf GPS units first came on the market, I have to say that I was skeptical about their accuracy and how they could benefit my golf game. This skepticism was based on absolutely no first hand knowledge of how the devices worked. When a friend purchased the SkyCaddie SG3 model, I was able to give the technology a test drive for myself.

The first thing I was impressed with was how simple they were to use. On all of the SkyCaddie models, you gave an lcd screen which shows you immediate yardages to the front, center and back of the green. On the models with the Intelligreen technology, there is a graphic display of the green outline and you can actually manipulate the location of the pin on the green, so you can dial in almost pin point accurate yardage to the flagstick. I believe this feature is only available on the SG4 and SG5 models. Even on the earlier SG3 model that I first tried, the display was very easy to read and the navigation was extremely simple. Not only do you get those 3 yardages from wherever you happen to be standing on the course, but the SkyCaddie will also give you accurate yardages to objects and landmarks on the course. End of fairways, large tree on the right, water hazard in front of the green, and fairway bunkers are just some of the objects that you can get yardages for when you're checking the unit prior to hitting a shot.

The second, and most eye opening thing about the SkyCaddie was that I finally realized how far off I was estimating my yardages. I had always used the old sprinkler head method (if the course had the markings), or the red, white & blue stakes in the fairway to estimate yardage, but after using a GPS for yardages, I was often 10-15 or more yards off on my estimates. This could be a club or more error, which means the difference of hitting the green or dumping a shot in the lake. This is how we can all improve our scores. Accurate yardage means as long as you know approximately how far you hit your clubs, you will have a much higher percentage chance of hitting the ball to the location you need.

Prices on the SkyCaddie units range from a couple hundred dollars up to $500 for the newest SG5 unit which features a color screen and some new features. You do have to pay a yearly subscription fee so you can access the SkyGolf website and download the courses into your unit. You can choose subscription packages by State, Country or International and the fees increase depending on which package you choose. I have yet to find a course that I was playing that was not in the SkyGolf database, and if you can't find a course, you can send in a course request, and eventually they'll get out to map it. I believe all of the model's allow you to hold 10 courses, which you can delete or add at any time via the Skygolf website.

I can highly recommend any of the SkyCaddie GPS units to golfers of all experience levels. I personally feel lost if I play a round without it. Try one out if you get a chance. I have been putting up with prerecorded television on its traditional formats for years now.

I guess that it would have been around 3 or 4 years ago when I decided that I could do without the VHS, it was a sad day saying goodbye to some of the movies I owned on Video Cassette but it was a relief to not only lose the necessity to store these bible sized monsters in the house, but also to remove the triple wired dinosaur form the living room. Well this old relic of my youth had been replaced with a normal DVD player and soon my DVD collection started in earnest.

The trouble is that I don't really want to store large items of digital media anymore. My music has all been compressed down into 320kbps mp3, my photos are all now burned onto DVD's and stored in triplicate.

So I start converting my DVD's and ripping them onto my hard drive. trouble is that before long I have almost 60 Gig of movies and really I prefer to watch them on my TV than on the PC screen.Then a solution occurs to me, a complete home entertainment solution.

I needed mass storage and it was only going to be a matter of time before I found a solution.

There it was, a DVD hard disc recorder which could like do everything I wanted and here it is a:Philips Hard Disc DVD Recorder with 250gig hard drive.

First I networked it into my PC and dragged across 80 Gig of movies in DivX format ( that is about 100 films ). Next my photos for the past few years ( some 30 Gig ) were imported followed by 30 Gig of music in mp3 format to join the party.

Next I hooked up the DVDr recorder to my TV ( sadly I am not yet an owner of a flatscreen TV but that is surely only a matter of time ) and piped the excellent audio connection to my home hifi.

The results are superb, even though I have not even explored this unit's impressive recording capacity - and it is capable of that lovely Video Plus thing - I have now a complete home media centre at a very attractive price.

I had one Zrii sales independent associate call me on a cold call on my business line that is specifically for my wellness clients and she started to act like a telemarketer. I have checked out the Zrii company based out of Utah and saw a lot of hype in their videos and way of doing business, so I decided to check them out and give them an honest review.

The popularity of "exotic juice" seems to really be growing. For example, there are over 1000 different Noni Juice companies out there. You can buy Noni Juice or Mangosteen Juice from even your local Costco family shopping store. There are new juice companies popping up on the internet every month. I have actually tried most of the juices out there. Are all these juice companies scams? Or are they the next cure to everything that ails you?

Which one is the best? Or all they all just out to get into your wallet?

The Zrii Business

I will not go into how Zrii CEO Bill Farley led Fruit of the Loom into bankruptcy and how he was fired by Fruit of the Loom's board of directors right before he started up this new juice company. Everybody makes mistakes and can learn from them.

It appears that the current focus of Zrii is on

1) The seven key ingredients (which are watered down by the primary ingredients, the grape and pear juices), and

2) The income opportunity.

So is Zrii Amalaki Juice a Scam based on nothing more than making a dollar at the "expense" of someone else? They may sell overpriced juice, but they do sell a real product, so they are not a scam. Although if you are looking for a home business that you can do from home or online, I would not recommend them. It seems that you have to recruit a lot of people before you start getting enough income to be able to live on. It can also cost around $2000 to start with the top business package, so it is a little expensive and hard to convince people to join for a "juice". It is never recommended to join a Network Marketing company within the first 2 years since 80% of NM companies fail in their first two years.

Since I post a lot of articles on health and wellness, I had one Zrii Independent Executive (IE) distributor sales associate call me with an unsolicited cold call to pitch her Zrii businesss opportunity to me. Before I knew it, she went right into the compensation plan. I asked how she found my phone number and she said she was using Google to search for phone numbers of people to call, searching specifically for people in other companies. When I tried to ask her for more information, she hung up on me! She had called from a blocked caller number, so I could not report her to Zrii for a SPAM phone call.

So if your idea of "working from home" and the internet is cold calling people who never even asked for information... then by all means, go join Zrii. The Zrii Juice Product

Zrii doesn't list its "nutrition facts" label on the website!

They have flashy videos and promise of money, but no ingredients? How do you compare the actual contents of the juice? Sure, the Zrii corporate website lists the "featured" ingredients -- Amalaki, Ginger, Turmeric, Tulsi, Schizandra, Jujube and Haritaki, but they do not tell you how much of each and they don't even tell you about the primary ingredients being

• Apple juice

• Pear juice

• Pomegranate juice

This had my hype warning going

I had to order a bottle of the Zrii Amalaki juice in order to see the other main ingredients (cheap filler juices), but still, even the label on the bottle conveniently does not reveal how much of each fruit is in the bottle. A little fishy...

What does Zrii Amalaki Juice taste like?

When I tasted the Zrii juice, it tasted like sour cool-aid with extra sugar.

I personally have no huge problems against "juices".

I mean, hey, I enjoy a nice glass of V8 vegetable juice from time to time. But I see some problems with this company. They may have something good, but I see a money - driven company with another expensive apple juice product that they are trying to peddle.

* Problem - WATER. When you buy a juiced product, you are paying a lot for WATER as one of the main ingredients.

* Problem - OXIDATION. The minute you open the seal on a juice, it begins to oxidize... but many of these companies suggest putting their exotic juice in the refrigerator and consuming it over the period of SEVERAL DAYS or even longer!

* Problem - PASTEURIZATION. Most of the beneficial nutrients are destroyed in the heat process of pasteurization of the juice.

* Problem - SUGAR. A High pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) test is a scientific test using a chemist machine that will give an exact breakdown of the molecules in a product. Most juices out there that have been tested on a HPLC, have been found to have fructose (sugar) as the primary compound. Sugar may not necessarily even have been added as an ingredient, but the fruits were naturally high in sugar.

* Problem - OUTRAGEOUS PRICE. When 4 bottles of Zrii juice cost around $120, I begin to wonder how much the price of apple juice has risen to.

But The Two Biggest Problems...

The two biggest problems as pointed out by some experts, are (1) deadly changes in PH level of blood suggested by Dr. Young, and (2) as pointed out by Natural News author Mike Adams... overly hyped "exotic" fruits that only seem exciting since the average consumer may not know anything about it. It may not be any different than just drinking apple juice or pear juice.

2. From reading the article from Natural News by Mike Adams called "Review: Zrii Juice and the Chopra Center - Does it Stand Up to the Hype?" I found that he had some issues also with the nutrition of the product. His review is a little more in depth on the nutrition. He even mentions how the Zrii bottles are plastic and questions whether or not they contain the toxic chemical Bisphenol-A as most plastics do. He complains about how the "primary ingredients (the apple juice, pear juice and pomegranate juice) are NOT organic" and may contain pesticides. He complains about the price, the slightly deceptive marketing, and even calls the product "DEAD, cooked plants mixed in a base of processed grape and pear juice". Adams goes on to say that by the small amount of good ingredients in the juice, that the product is "an insult to genuine Ayurvedic medicine" and he cannot figure out why the Chopra Center would want to mess up their reputation by being affiliated with this Zrii juice.

Do Your Research Before Using Zrii

Zrii was not for me. I found an alternative that shows more promise in many ways. You will want to do your own research if you are looking into the Zrii juice or Zrii business opportunity.

I did a lot of research before finding the right company and supplement that I now use on a daily basis with a real noticeable difference in my energy and wellness. Trend Following and Mean Reversion Strategies With Bollinger Bands

Bollinger Bands are a very useful indicator developed by John Bollinger based on a moving average and standard deviations. There are four parts to Bollinger Bands:

1. Moving Average: By default, a 20-period simple moving average is used.

2. Standard Deviations: A measure of the volatility of the price series.

3. Upper Band: The upper band is usually 2 standard deviations (calculated from 20-periods of closing data) above the moving average.

4. Lower Band: The lower band is usually 2 standard deviations below the moving average.

At 2 standard deviations, Bollinger Bands should contain 85% of the movement of the instrument being measured. The higher the number of standard deviations used will make it so that even more of the price data is contained in the bands. Conversely the smaller the number of standard deviations used will result in less price data in the bands.

Knowing that you can see how these can be used in several ways, a few of which we will mention here. For stock trading the two most used strategies using bands are breakout and mean reversion trading.

Breakout-Since roughly 85% of a securities price action is contained in the bands many traders see a movement outside of the bands as a significant sign that something is happening whether it be an earnings announcement, buyout, or just a big move in the sector or market. So if the stock hasn't been moving too much and then breaks up above the upper band they would consider buying it (You would do the opposite if it broke down below the lower band). A simple breakout strategy would be to buy (or short) when a security closes above (or below) the upper (or lower) band and exit when it closed below (or above) its moving average.

Mean Reversion-Since approximately 85% of a stocks price action is contained in a 2 standard deviation Bollinger Band another way to use them is to sell or sell short when a stock gets to the upper band and buy when it gets to the lower band.

As you can tell there are several ways to use Bollinger Bands. For instance you could take the mean reversion strategy and overlay a Bear Call Spread/Bull Put Spread strategy over it by selling a slightly out of the money call and buying the next strike up when the stock pierces the upper band and doing the opposite (sell the slightly out of the money put and buy the next strike down) when it pierces the lower band. The next day, I bought the system and here's what I got. I got 3 ebooks. One for the NBA, MLB and NFL. If not, then there's two other bookmaker he recommends and they're both good and reputable as well. Another little freebie he gives is a Las Vegas 3 days and 2 nights vacation for 2 for a special price once you sign up for this travel agency. I, myself, was not interested in this offer so I don't particularly care for it.

Now let me explain something here because I don't want you to get confused. When you look at sports betting systems that boast 50-2 or 21-0 records, that's not to say that their system never lost a bet. I doubt that there's a sports betting system or software that can predict a winner 100% of the time.

Let me explain how this works. When John emails you his picks, you have only 3 betting strategies to worry about. Bet 1, Bet 2, and Bet 3. If you lose Bet 1, you move to Bet 2 and if you lose Bet 2, then you move to Bet 3. This is where the 97% winning picks comes into play because according to John, who says he is a statistics kind of guy, when his picks reaches Bet 3, there a 97% chance of winning that bet, therefore you bet big during this time. Most of the time he's right, but there's still that 3% chance of losing and when you lose Bet 3 that's considered a lost. So you see, 21-0 into this MLB season basically means I had to bet all the way to Bet 3 a couple of times but all of them have been successful...so far! So if you ever go and look at other sports betting systems, don't be fooled by their records, but then again, why would you, this product works and comes highly recommended.

There's really not much left to say except for the fact that his system really works. It sure made a believer out of me and I don't even watch baseball! That's the beauty of John's system. You don't need to know how the game works or even watch the game, all you need to worry about is placing your picks when he emails them to you.
